On Tuesday, January 23, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced the lists of films nominated for the Oscar. And although every year there are exclusions that attract relatively attention, none of this year’s mentions were characterized by being an absolute surprise. There is talk of the absence of Margot Robbie in the Best Actress category for her work in Barbie –his partner, Ryan Gosling, who played Ken, is included in the shortlist for Best Supporting Actor–, and also the absence of Greta Gerwig in Best Direction. However, it could not be said that it was a surprise: the Academy has not historically been known for awarding films such as Barbie in those categories; Both women are nominated in other shortlists, Robbie as a producer in Best Film, and Greta Gerwig in Best Adapted Screenplay.
Among the notable nominations is that of Lily Gladstone (The Moon Killers), who immediately generated headlines announcing her place in history as the first Native American woman to be nominated for Best Actress. Composer John Williams celebrates his 54th nomination! for her work on the Indiana Jones sequel, while Diane Warren receives her fifteenth mention for the song “The Fire Within“, which is part of the soundtrack of the movie Flamin’ Hot. On the other hand, Latin America is present in the Best Photography category, with the presence of the Mexican cinematographer Rodrigo Prietobut also with the nomination of Infinite memoryChilean documentary Maite Alberdi (who is no stranger to the Oscar, since her film The mole agent was nominated in 2021).

But if we take into account the number of nominations, it seems that this will be the year of Oppenheimerby Christopher Nolan, a film that leads the mentions with 13, including main categories such as Best Film, Best Direction, Best Actor and Supporting Actor and Best Adapted Screenplay. Poor Things, by Yorgos Lanthimos follows with 11 nominations, although its best opportunities are in the actress and production design categories. Similarly, Netflix leads in the number of nominations in the studio race towards the Oscar (with 18), but it is A24 who managed to put not one but two of its films in the queen category of Best Picture: Area of interest and Past Lives.
