Every Christopher Nolan film is a must-see event for many moviegoers, but the British filmmaker has put everything on the table in his twelfth feature film. A historical drama with shades of thriller three hours long, filmed on 65mm IMAX without resorting to a single CG shot and featuring one of Hollywood’s most enviable ensemble ensembles, led by Cillian Murphy. And after the world premiere in Paris, we finally have the first reactions to Oppenheimer.
based on the book American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer, the film focuses on the paradox behind the enigmatic “father of the atomic bomb.” This theoretical physicist was director of the secret Los Alamos laboratory and was involved in the Manhattan Project, which is credited with developing the first nuclear weapons used to bomb the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945.
Is it THE movie of the summer? Does he have the potential to sweep and stay in the conversation for next awards season? Christopher Nolan’s masterpiece? Here the first reactions of oppenheimer:
Bilge Ebiri of vulture:
OPENHEIMER is…incredible. The word that keeps coming to mind is “fearsome.” A relentlessly paced, insanely detailed, intricate historical drama that builds and builds and builds until Nolan brings the hammer down in the most astonishing, shattering way.

Matt Maytum of total films:
#oppenheimer left me stunned: a character study on the grandest scale, with a sublime central performance by Cillian Murphy. An epic historical drama but with a distinctly Nolan sensibility: the tension, structure, sense of scale, startling sound design, remarkable visuals. wow

“oppenheimer It floored me: a character study on a grand scale, with a sublime central performance from Cillian Murphy. An epic historical drama but with Nolan’s distinctive sensibility: the tension, the structure, the sense of scale, the striking sound design, the remarkable visuals. Wow”.
Lindsey Bahr of Associated Press:
It’s hard to talk about something as dense as this in something as silly as a tweet or thread but Oppenheimer really is a serious, philosophical, adult drama that’s as tense and exciting as Dunkirk. And the big moment – THAT MOMENT – is awe inspiring.

“oppenheimerby Christopher Nolan, is truly a spectacular achievement, in its truthful and concise adaptation, inventive storytelling, and nuanced performances by Cillian Murphy, Emily Blunt, Robert Downey Jr., Matt Damon, and many, many others involved, some for just one scene. .
It’s hard to talk about something as dense as this in something as silly as a tweet or a thread, but oppenheimer is truly a serious, philosophical, adult drama that is just as tense and exciting as it is. Dunkirk. And the big moment, THAT MOMENT, is awesome.”
Jonathan Dean of Sunday Times:
The downside? The women are badly served – Emily Blunt only once gets out of her stressed mother role. But it’s straight into my Nolan top three, alongside Memento & The Prestige
—Jonathan Dean (@JonathanDean_) July 11, 2023
“Totally absorbed in Oppenheimer, a dense, dialogue-oriented and tense film partly about the atomic bomb, but mostly about how doomed we are. Happy summer! Murphy is good, but the support is essential: Damon, Downey Jr. and Ehrenreich even bring jokes. A bold, inventive and complex film to mystify its audience.
The bad? The women are underdeveloped: Emily Blunt only steps out of the role of stressed-out mother to her once. But she’s squarely in my Nolan top three, along with memento and the big trick”.
Robbie Collin of The Telegraph:
Am torn between being all coy and mysterious about Oppenheimer and just coming out and saying it’s a total knockout that split my brain open like a twitchy plutonium nucleus and left me sobbing through the end credits like I can’t even remember what else.

“I’m torn between being all shy and mysterious about oppenheimer or just go out there and say it’s a total knockout that cracked my brain open like a nervous plutonium nucleus and left me sobbing through the end credits like I couldn’t remember what else.”
Simon Thompson of Forbes:
#oppenheimer is powerful stuff. Cillian Murphy’s flawless awards worthy performance is next level. Every player in this rich ensemble cast is at the top of their game. Christopher Nolan’s haunting opus is remarkable and Hoyte van Hoytema’s execution of his vision of him is breathtaking. pic.twitter.com/oRFAVM64Kg

Thaddeus Stephen, of The Hudson Dispatch:
#oppenheimer review: Nolan’s masterpiece, impeccably acted. Bold, from start through finish. Nolan’s decision to end the film on the Trinity test will go down as one of the great, daring choices in cinema history. We’re left to grapple with the future ourselves.

Maximilien Pierrette, from AlloCiné:
soufflé pair #oppenheimer !
Plus classique en appearance, mais qui s’incrit parfaitement dans l’œuvre de Nolan en distillant ses motifs au gré du récit: un biopic trepidant sur l’inventeur de la bombe atomique, qui se die en thriller captivant dans sa dernière heure dingue. pic.twitter.com/XbqjGP8k2n— Maximilien PIERRETTE ⚡️ (@maxp26) July 11, 2023
“I sigh for oppenheimer. More classic in appearance, but one that fits perfectly into Nolan’s filmography by distilling his motives according to history: a fast-paced biography about the inventor of the atomic bomb, which becomes a captivating thriller in its crazy last hour ” .
Kenneth Turan of Los Angeles Times:
“oppenheimer is arguably Nolan’s most impressive work to date in the way he combines his renowned visual mastery with some of the most in-depth character studies in recent American cinema.”
Elsa Keslassy, from Variety:
