OpenAI, the parent company of the artificial intelligence chatbot ChatGPT, has launched an initiative to make a more democratic contribution to AI development.
In the official announcement of May 25the company said it is preparing to award 10 grants worth $100,000 each for experiments to create a “proof of concept,” a democratic process for determining the standards that AI systems must follow.
According to OpenAI, standards must be “within the limits defined by law” and benefit humanity.
“This grant represents a step toward establishing democratic processes to oversee AGI and ultimately superintelligence.”
The company said the experiments will form the basis of a more “global” and “ambitious” project in the future. He also noted that the conclusions of the experiments would not be binding, but would instead be used to explore important questions around AI governance.
The grant comes from the non-profit division of OpenAI. The results of the project will be free and accessible to the public.
This comes at a time when governments around the world are trying to enforce regulations on general-purpose generative AI. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman recently met with regulators in Europe to stress the importance of non-restrictive regulation and not hindering innovation.
A week earlier, Altman testified before the US Congress with a similar message.
In the announcement of the new grant program, OpenAI echoes the view that laws must adapt to technology, and that AI needs “more intricate and adaptable guidelines for its conduct.”
He gave as an example questions like: “How should controversial opinions be represented in the results of the AI?”. After which he affirmed that no individual, company or country should dictate such decisions.
OpenAI had already warned that if AI is not developed cautiously, a superhuman form of AI could emerge within a decade. Therefore, developers “have to get it right.”
