Thanks to the advancement of technology, you can now have all the knowledge in the world in the palm of your hand. Telephones have become tools that offer multiple benefits such as staying informed in real time of what is happening in the rest of the planet. At the same time, innovations focused on the field of health have also been designed. The clearest example is a new app created to monitor the menstrual period in adolescents. With this, it is the first of its kind in our country.
Birth of this new mobile application
In this case, Saba, an Essity brand, a leading hygiene and health company dedicated to improving people’s well-being, joined forces with the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) Mexico. The result is the campaign with a cause “The period unites us” that is accompanied by Oky, the first app for girls and adolescents to monitor their menstrual period in a friendly digital environment and according to them. To achieve this, it offers content made by professionals about menstruation, in addition to a diverse language that is far from stereotypes.
This effort seeks to improve the conditions in which girls and adolescents manage their menstruation to avoid bad experiences in your environment. This also avoids risk situations such as unplanned pregnancies and sexually transmitted diseases.
Accessible and uncomplicated language for teenagers
According to a study carried out by UNICEF and Essity, only 6% of girls and adolescents have correct information about the menstrual hygiene. While 43% miss school during their period. For this reason, Oky seeks to be a content tool that can bridge these information gaps and generate optimal environments for all girls and adolescents.
In terms of design, a participatory process of co-creation of girls and adolescents was used during all stages of the app’s development. The goal is to ensure that Oky is relevant to their lives and context. The result is a menu with games and avatars, calendar, period monitoring, daily, facts and figures, and reliable and quality information examined by health specialists. In addition, girls and adolescents can give feedback on the app, as well as suggest and upload content.
“The period unites us” was a cause marketing campaign created by Saba and UNICEF Mexico. It was born with the aim of generating the necessary resources to finance the creation, development and dissemination of the Oky application. Its purpose is to help girls and adolescents to have a better management of their period and intimate hygiene in their homes, schools and wherever they are. In this way they feel safe and have the necessary information to have a healthy and correct menstrual management, since hygiene is their right”, says Ivette Medrano, Marketing Director of Saba.
