Within the current supply of vaccines against Covid-19 there is a constant because most require two doses. Based on clinical trials, it is the best way to ensure long-term protection. Even now with the expansion of the Delta Variant, some pharmaceutical companies like Pfizer recommend that it be three injections. While there are also alternatives such as Cansino that are characterized by being single-dose.
New recommendation to increase protection
Now, according to the results of a recent study, the antibodies generated by this immunization of Chinese origin tend to decrease after six months. Therefore, the new recommendation of the pharmacist is that half a year after the application of the vaccine a booster dose is offered.
In this sense, based on what has been observed, the company assures that when receiving a second dose the neutralizing antibodies are multiplied by eight. In this way, an even greater protection is obtained than that obtained with the first inoculation.
What does the Cofepris say?
Regarding this new recommendation, Cansino points out that he has already delivered the necessary documentation to the Federal Commission for the Protection against Sanitary Risks (Cofepris). While until this moment there is still no response from the Mexican authorities. Therefore the immunization scheme in our country remains the same.
What is now expected is that a response will be offered about this new indication in the following days. If they comply with what is indicated by the pharmacist, then those who have already received the single-dose in Mexico would have to return after six months to receive a booster injection. Therefore, the numbers of Mexicans with a complete vaccination scheme would decrease.
Vaccinated population in Mexico
In this sense, according to the official figures of the Ministry of Health (SSa), up to now a total of 27 million 363 thousand 404 people over 18 years of age have completed their immunization scheme, which represents 54 percent of those who have attended any vaccination center in Mexico. The remaining 46 percent, which are 23 million 471 thousand 811 people, have received the first dose in the protection scheme against Covid-19.
By state, Mexico City has inoculated 86 percent of people over 18 years of age, while Baja California and Quintana Roo have applied at least one dose to 80 percent of the target population. The remaining entities have coverage ranging from 33 to 78 percent of their adult population.
Finally, Cansino declared that phase 3 clinical trials of his vaccine are still ongoing. 15,000 volunteers participate in the tests and when they are concluded the final efficacy results will be published. Although according to what was analyzed in the previous phases, it is estimated that the biological applied with a dose offers a protection of between 51 and 60 percent.
While it is necessary to remember that the initial agreement signed with the Asian pharmaceutical company with Mexico was for 35 million doses. All those that have arrived in our country have been destined for teachers, police officers and the general population of some areas of the country.
