All of us who have ever played a Super Mario video game know what the game looks like. Princess peach. Blonde hair, blue eyes, pink and fuchsia dress, light blue garments and her golden crown with adornment jewels have identified her in the saga of Nintendo.
However, at some point in the history of video games, just before Mario became the main reference in the industry, Peach looked different.
As the oldest may well remember, the first Super Mario Bros. (1985) began to mark the path of this successful brand, revealing the main character and the items that are still used today in the plumber’s video games. A year later, an official book from the Japanese company showed a strange Princess Peach.
This is what Princess Peach looked like
As recalled by a report published on the website of Go NintendoNintendo established the look and style of their characters over the decades, definitely true with the Mario series.
Today, there are detailed style guides and more for Mario, Luigi, Peach and others, but things were quite different when the company was just getting started with console video games.
The image above is a compilation of images that come from an officially licensed Nintendo book from 1986. The company had not clearly defined what any of the Mario characters looked like at this time, which paved the way for this interesting Princess Peach design.
Peach looks unrecognizable by modern standards, the only resemblance being the pink dress, and looking similar to that of Queen Elizabeth II. Fortunately, Shigeru Miyamoto rectified and the princess and ruler of the Mushroom Kingdom is what she is today.
