The number of deaths from the cholera bacterium in 2019 was 143 thousand deaths.
The Oaxaca Health Services (SSO) established an epidemiological fence, after a case of cholera was detected in a 68-year-old woman, which was confirmed by the Institute of Epidemiological Diagnosis and Reference (InDRE).
What is the InDRE?
It is an institution that is part of the Ministry of Health, and is in charge of diagnosis, control, reference, research and technological development for the surveillance of epidemiological diseases in Mexico.
According to the Website of the Ministry of Health, the InDre has 4 services that meet different objectives such as:
- diagnostic studies
- Sale of Supplies to State Public Health Laboratories (LESP)
- Courses and Training in service
- Evaluation of Diagnostic Tests
The InDRE began as the Institute of Health and Tropical Diseases in 1939, by 1985 the National Network of Public Health Laboratories was strengthened and in 1989 it changed its name to the National Institute of Epidemiological Diagnosis and Reference, Dr Manuel Martínez Báez.
The head of the SSO, Virginia Sánchez Ríos, commented that it is a non-toxigenic variant that causes gastroenteritis, but it is not as serious as it is in other countries where the disease is endemic.
The health sector specifies that cholera is an acute intestinal bacterial disease characterized by the sudden onset of diarrhea. The short incubation period, which fluctuates between two hours and five days, increases the potentially explosive nature of epidemic outbreaks.
