Wuhan authorities have announced that they will test its entire population for COVID-19. This after the central Chinese city where the coronavirus first emerged reported its first local cases in more than a year.
Wuhan is already acting
The city of 11 million is rapidly rolling out comprehensive nucleic acid testing to all residents. Li Tao, a senior Wuhan official, told the media on Tuesday.
Authorities announced Monday that Seven locally transmitted cases had been found among migrant workers in the city. Breaking a yearlong streak after it crushed an initial outbreak with an unprecedented shutdown in early 2020.
Residents of entire cities are already in lockdown
China has confined the residents of entire cities to their homes. It suspended domestic transportation links and has implemented massive testing in recent days as it battles its biggest coronavirus outbreak in months.
Nationwide, China on Tuesday reported at least 90 new confirmed COVID-19 cases on the mainland as of Aug. 2. Compared to 98 the day before, according to the National Health Commission (NHC). That brings the number of cases in the last 10 days to more than 400.
How were they transmitted?
Of the newly confirmed cases, 61 were transmitted locally, the health authority said. That compares with 55 local cases a day earlier.
A total of 45 local symptomatic patients were reported in eastern Jiangsu province. Five in Nanjing city and 40 in Yangzhou city, the provincial government said on Tuesday.
Were detected six cases of local transmission in Hunan province and three in Hubei province, NHC data showed. Hubei Province said the three patients were found in the capital city of Wuhan.
No new deaths were reported
China’s Yunnan Province in July reported a COVID-19 outbreak due to the Delta variant. Yunnan shares a border with Myanmar, where coronavirus infections have increased.
“What is concerning about this outbreak is how widespread it has become,” said Katrina Yu of Beijing’s Al Jazeera. Noting that 16 provinces have reported cases in the last 10 days.
Millions under lockdown and it’s not just Wuhan
The more than 1.3 million residents of downtown Yangzhou are now confined to their homes. And each household can send only one person outdoors per day to purchase essentials. The city government said Tuesday.
The announcement follows similar movements in Zhangjiajie, a popular tourist destination in central China’s Hunan Province. As well as in the nearby city of Zhuzhou that affects more than two million people in total.
Theatrical performances in Zhangjiajie
The outbreak spread to Hunan from Nanjing last month after people linked to a group at Nanjing airport attended theatrical performances in Zhangjiajie.
Since then, authorities have been tracking thousands of people who attended the show and urging tourists not to travel to areas where cases have been found.
