From breweries on opposite ends of the globe to aircraft technicians at isolated airports, telecom infrastructure company Nokia has been looking for ways to use the metaverse to help workers in remote locations.
Nokia, remembered by many as a maker of consumer mobile devices, has since pivoted toward developing technology and equipment that “delivers the Internet.”.
Robert Joyce, CTO of Nokia Oceania, told Cointelegraph that part of those plans also includes the delivery of the metaverse.
“Nokia created two labs last year to really study the metaverse and the technologies that underpin it.”
Last year, Nokia began collaborating with an Australian university to offer a 5G-connected microbrewery using metaverse technology, Joyce said..
Using augmented reality (AR), researchers at a brewing technology lab at the University of Technology Sydney have been working alongside researchers at a sister facility at the University of Dortmund, Germany..
“Actually they do joint experiments in which they brew beer, change the process, temperature, times, volumes, recipes […] and they feed back all this process of elaboration in the digital twin”, explained.
“So they can simulate brewing in the digital twin and perfect the beer in the digital space.”
Meanwhile, In South Australia, Joyce said Nokia has been using the metaverse to potentially help Cessna aircraft technicians at remote airports..
“We worked with a company that had a virtual Cessna plane […] You have a Cessna in front of you, and then you have an audio instruction in your ear to tell you how to change the wheel, or change a part on the engine,” Joyce said..
“We had Microsoft HoloLens connected to 5G and we were able to educate people on how to service a Cessna using augmented reality in this case.”
Earlier this month, Nokia’s global director of strategy and technology, Nishant Batra said at the World Economic Forum (WEF) that the metaverse will have the biggest immediate impact on industries, rather than the consumer market..
“Ports have started using digital twins to track every container on their docks, no matter how deep in the stacks. Aerospace companies are building engines and airframes in the digital world to simulate exactly how an aircraft will fly, long before its first mechanical part is machined,” Batra wrote in an opinion piece. at the WEF on January 13.
the industry #metaverse promises to fundamentally change the way we work, while driving productivity, boosting safety, and enabling new levels of flexibility.

Joyce agreed with the statement, adding that she doesn’t expect the “consumer metaverse” to take off until 2030..
Said by the next year there will be five times more revenue spent in the “industrial metaverse” compared to the consumer or business metaverse.
“The technology isn’t there yet, it’s crude,” Joyce says, referring to available consumer metaverse devices. currently.
“It’s not the best experience to have a Quest 2 on your head for a couple of hours, and it won’t be until people get to augmented reality wearables that are comfortable. [y] mass produced.”
“We see this three to five year lag before we really see mass uptake of consumer VR or AR services.”
When asked about the role that blockchain will play in the future of the metaverse, Joyce was optimistic that blockchain technology will be key when there are payments or an asset transfer involved..
“It’s clear that if we want integrity in a metaverse, the blockchain will play an important role,” Joyce said..
“If I were to buy a house next door to Snoop Dogg’s and I wanted to make sure it couldn’t be picked up and changed and copied, that’s where blockchain is quite useful in terms of maintaining uniqueness in a digital space.”
Joyce, however, said that he does not believe that blockchain is a necessity in all applications..
“It’s not an essential technology for the metaverse, but I’m glad we have it. […] and will be used in the metaverse,” concluded.
