As reported by the company, Nokia will develop innovative technologies by deploying an LTE/4G communications system on the lunar surface, helping to pave the way for a sustainable human presence on the Moon. The contract awarded to Nokia is part of NASA’s Tipping Point program, which fosters the development of commercial space capabilities and benefits future missions. NASA plans to build on these innovations for its Artemis program, which will establish sustainable operations on the Moon later in the decade in preparation for an expedition to Mars.
Thierry E. Klein, President of Bell Labs Solutions Research, in an interview, provided a deeper insight into the ambitious initiative that will see Nokia’s LTE/4G network, the precursor to 5G, deliver critical communication capabilities for a variety of future data transmission applications.
