The most recent data from Inegi reported that the COVID-19 virus was the second cause of death in Mexico. Which represented almost one in every 5 deaths during 2020.
“With preliminary figures based on administrative records, 201,163 deaths from Covid-19 were registered in Mexico during 2020. A figure that is compared with the 148,629 deaths confirmed by Covid-19 from the appropriate figures from the SSa”, revealed Julio Santaella, President of Inegi.
Mexico in 4th place in the world in deaths from COVID-19
Mexico is the fourth country with the most deaths from Covid-19, with almost 240,000 deaths and 2.79 million infections confirmed by the Ministry of Health.
On the other hand, according to data from Johns Hopkins University, the country that reports the most deaths is the United States, with about 606,000 deaths. This was followed by Brazil (528,000) and India (404,000), which experienced a spectacular increase in deaths due to the virulence of the delta variant.
Global Scale
The top five are completed by Mexico (234,000) and Peru (193,000) have multiplied their deaths by 3.5 in just over two months. Followed by Russia (137,000).
The global scale continues with three European countries: the United Kingdom, Italy and France. The top 10 positions end with Colombia.
The passage of the DELTA variant through Mexico
According to data from El Financiero; The Delta variant is already the dominant one in COVID-19 infections in Mexico City, Oliva López, the capital’s Health Secretary, reported this Friday.
“As we had pointed out at other times, there is already over 90 percent predominance of the sequenced tests, which are not all, it is an estimate of the distribution in the city,” said the official.
In addition, he explained that there are other variants of interest that are permanently monitored. However, they do not have the same weight.
In that sense, Delta displaced the Alfa, Gama and the so-called ‘Mexican’ variants, which is 159, and which was responsible for the COVID wave in January.
WHO ran out of funds due to Delta variant
Amid panic over the rapid advancement of the Delta variant, it is speculated that the World Health Organization (WHO) ran out of funds. So it is seeking $ 11.5 billion in donations to continue the battle against the dangerous mutation of COVID-19.
The WHO requires a sum of 11.5 billion dollars in urgent funds to face the Delta variant of covid-19. Because some of the richest nations shirk responsibility for programs.
What is it needed for?
A large part of the cash requested from WHO partners is needed to buy tests, oxygen and face masks in the poorest nations. So says the document that is expected to be published this week. And a quarter would go to buy millions of vaccines that would otherwise go elsewhere.
