The new Mercedes-AMG SL is practically ready to storm dealerships, only with gasoline versions. A range that will be completed with a plug-in hybrid PHEV version that we discovered last summer, and that you can already see naked in these spy photos: those of the new Mercedes-AMG SL E Performance PHEV 2022.
A Rplug-in hybrid oadster? Yes, Mercedes dares with everything and spares absolutely nothing. Last summer we already discovered the new sports convertible with camouflage and the rear hatch of the battery charging port, one of several options with this technology that will arrive with different power levels. But, for the most incredulous, these spy photos arriving from the north of Sweden, confirm the first plug-in hybrid roadster in history.
The star brand understands that it is not a technology restricted to other types of bodywork, essential to reduce consumption, emissions and provide a significant extra power. Naked, and without hiding the slightest, this new mechanical option of the new Mercedes-AMG SL it has been hunted through the rigorous winter tests essential to its performance.
Mercedes-AMG SL E Performance 2022, the roadster with PHEV technology
On the aesthetic level, and especially at the front, there is no no detail that suggests that we are facing a model as sporty as it is efficient. The new features of the SL look without distinction, with an elegant and aggressive design, although this unit shows that it hides a powerful engine with a team of brakes to match. The yellow brake calipers betray a team with carbon-ceramic discs. The most illuminating detail is at the rear, with a large cover housed in the bumper that is by no means inconspicuous.
And it hosts the charging port with CCS 2 connectors to recharge the battery which is housed just ahead, under the minimal rear seats. In addition, the four square exhaust trims are the indication that it is a question of the most powerful version of the plug-in hybrid offer, the same as that of the sports saloon: that of the «AMG SL SE Performance», confirmed by Jochen Hermann, technical director of Mercedes-AMG.
Under the hood will mount the powerful 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8 petrol engine, and an electric motor that will offer an extra 204 hp, equipped with a two-speed gearbox installed on the rear axle. In this way, it will have all-wheel drive «4MATIC +» and an electric range of about 20 kilometers, although as a whole the new SL PHEV will offer unrivaled performance with more than 800 hp. The gearbox is a 9-speed automatic. The arrival on the market is scheduled for end of the year, with its presentation scheduled for next summer.
