At the moment there is no date for the generational change of Nintendo Switch.
While Nintendo Switch continues to grow at a good pace and exceeds 100 million consoles sold, during the presentation of the company’s latest fiscal report, the Nintendo board has not been spared the usual questions about a generational change for next year. That is, Nintendo Switch 2 or whatever the new generation of Nintendo consoles is finally called. The main concern of the company is the transition from one hardware to another in game development.
“We have already announced the release of a part of our software roadmap until next spring,” he said. “Unlike in the past, we continue to have a wide variety of games scheduled to be released, even beyond five years after release. This is because the Nintendo Switch has had such a smooth launch that it allows us to concentrate all our development resources on a single platform“, assured the president of Nintendo, Shuntaro Furukawa, during a recent question and answer session with investors (via VGC).
Facing the successor to Nintendo Switch that is expected sooner rather than later, although it is not yet announced, Furukawa assures that “the question of if we will be able to make such a smooth transition from Nintendo Switch to the next generation of hardware, it’s a big concern for us. Based on our experiences with the Wii, Nintendo DS, and other hardware, it’s very clear that one of the biggest obstacles is how to easily switch from one hardware to another“.
Beyond the games, Nintendo seems to bet on offer new services to ensure user loyalty during this generational transition that will take place soon. “To help alleviate this risk, we are focusing on building long-term relationships with our clients. While we will continue to release new software on Nintendo Switch, we will also provide services that also use Nintendo accounts and other IPs outside of the gaming software. We intend for this to help create a lasting impact with our customers.”
In this sense, Furukawa seemed to confirm last February that Nintendo is working on making its next console backward compatible with Nintendo Switch to “maintain and expand” those more than 100 million users they currently have. At the moment there are no concrete details about the next Nintendo hardware. After the unfulfilled leaks of a more powerful review of Nintendo Switch in recent years, it seems that the company would be thinking more about a traditional generational change.
