The virtual reality industry could be about to get a twist if the rumors on social media materialize. According to unconfirmed sources, Nintendo would be working on a prototype of autonomous virtual reality glasseswhich could change the way we experience video games and immersion in the virtual world.
The alleged nintenquest, as they’ve been called online, would be a standalone virtual reality headset reminiscent of Oculus’s hit Quest 2 model. Most interesting, according to computer todayis that Nintendo plans to take advantage of its iconic franchises, such as Mario and Zelda, to offer exclusive gaming experiences on this new device.
The idea that Nintendo is considering entering the world of virtual reality is not entirely surprising. The Japanese company has shown interest in this field in the past, including with releases like the Virtual Boy in 1995, although that attempt ended in failure due to the technological limitations of the time.
Better than the VR Kit?
In 2019, Nintendo released the Nintendo Labo VR Kit, a set of cardboard virtual reality glasses aimed at a younger audience. Although this initiative had its limitations, it made it clear that Nintendo has a genuine interest in exploring virtual reality as a form of entertainment.

Nintendo’s possible foray into the virtual reality market could be related to the life cycle of the Nintendo Switch, which is nearing its end. With increasing competition in the gaming console and device market, Nintendo may be looking to reinvent itself and diversify its offerings.
If Nintendo manages to launch NintenQuest, with exclusive games based on its popular franchises like Mario, Zelda, Kirby, Pokémon and others, could revolutionize the virtual reality market. Beware: it could dominate this market and compete directly with Oculus.
