Nick Creegan, who plays Marquis Jet in Batwoman, spoke about his role as the first black Joker in history.
Although the first season of Batwoman broke stereotypes and helped normalize sexual diversity in the superhero world, the second and third seasons of it have had the same achievements in terms of racial inclusion. Such is the case of the version of Joker that we will see in Batwoman, who will be played by the Afro-descendant actor Nick Creegan.
He brings to life Marquis Jet, the evil brother of Ryan Wilder, the Batwoman played by Javicia Leslie. Nick Creegan spoke to The Wrap about his character, an article in which we can read: “When Marquis Jet (Creegan) was a kid, he was riding a school bus that was hijacked by the original Joker. During the match, the Clown Prince of Crime hit Marquis with a joy buzzer. From that day on, he was never the same, so his mother, Jada, tried to save him before he turned to the dark side… Naturally, the plans failed and Marquis ended up fully adopting his villainous facet, carrying out a takeover. hostile Wayne Enterprises as the first step in his plan to mess up Gotham.”
Creegan’s arrival at Batwoman’s Joker
In the interview, The Wrap asks Nick about playing a new version of Joker for Batwoman, and Creegan replied, “It’s crazy. It’s crazy, actually. Yeah, I’ve processed a lot the last few weeks, months, you know? It’s still surreal to me. It’s been a wild ride for me. You know, the reception of the new Joker, being the first person of color to play this role; the messages and love I have been receiving has been overwhelming. It’s been a fun ride.”
And on previous iterations of the character that inspired him: “One Halloween I dressed up as Jared Leto’s Joker in 2016 or 2015. And what I really liked about his Joker was how different it was from all the other interpretations, right? He wore chains and had gold teeth. And he was like a new, edgy, different version of the Joker.”
“And for Marquis, being that he’s so hip and into fashion, looking to define his style. It has things that people relate to, especially because it’s very New York and, you know, a little bit street, edgy, fun. So… I tried to take little elements from Jared Leto’s Joker, but I also made sure to weave in the maniacal laughter and madness that I saw in the eyes of Heath Ledger or Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker. So I’ve taken parts from a lot of them, but I still make it as original as possible… The laugh, for example, is my own laugh.”
How to create a character capable of deceiving Batwoman?
In the third season, Ryan Wilder meets his lost brother and mother, and although he feels threatened by his mother, he soon enters into a zone of trust with Marquis, who seems to want with his sister the life they never had. However, the charming character turns out to be a con man who manages to take over the Wayne family business.
To achieve this, Nick Creegan went through a process to gradually reveal the maniacal side of the seductive Marquis Jet: “One of the coolest parts of this role is knowing that I would eventually become the Joker, right? A few days ago a fan tweeted ‘I re-watched the season and after episode 7 I could see Nick subtly injecting Joker moments into Marquis from the very beginning’…from the very beginning I had so much fun being charming and feeding people vulnerability, and you know, making people empathize. It didn’t take me long to balance the charm, because there was always an undercurrent of madness.”
Dressing up the new Joker
In the interview, Marquis’ wardrobe is discussed in his version of Joker from Batwoman, which consists of an orange suit and purple hair. “It was very exciting, it was one of the funniest parts. Every time the wardrobe department and the hair department would ask me, ‘Nick, how do you like this? ‘ or ‘What do you want to do with this look?’ I was just like, ‘Oh my God.’ With the costumes, they just did very well. I mean, every suit I’ve had to wear as the Joker is so good…”
“…They asked me for my opinion. But I was like, ‘Maya, I really don’t have much to say. I love this. I want to take this and also the other option you gave me and the other options. So whatever he decides, I’m fine with it.’”
“And then there’s the hair, which was so much fun. Because at first, our head of the hair department asked me, ‘Nick, do you want to dye your hair purple? Or do you prefer to have cool extensions?’ And I was like, ‘Oh, I’ve never had extensions. Yes, let’s do it. And can we do different hairstyles in each episode?’”
Finally, they ask him if we will be able to see him with his face painted at some point: “I cannot divulge if that happens or not. But I want to say that everyone would like to put some paint on their face. I think that’s one of the coolest parts of the Joker. But also, you know, this version is brand new, and we’ve put our own spin on it. So I think they’ll be excited to see the new look. In episode eight, you will see something new that has never been introduced by any version of the Joker.”
