The digital work “Casa Batlló: Living Architecture” by the artist Refik Anadol on the facade of the building on Passeig de Gràcia in Barcelona, was auctioned at Christie’s headquarters in New York for USD 1.38 million, according to Casa Batlló.
This digital work on the building by the architect Antoni Gaudí was the only NFT in the Christie’s Spring Marquee Week auction series, and 10% of the proceeds will go to the Associació Aprenem Autisme, and the Fundació Adana, specialized in supporting to neurodiversity.
The NFT has the property of changing in real time according to the environmental data of the city and the ephemeris that are celebrated on the facade of Casa Batlló, such as Sant Jordi, Christmas or other social festivities. To complete the experience of the artwork, Firmenich’s digital innovation hub, D-LAB, has used visual data from images of the house combined with Barcelona-specific olfactory descriptors, to create an Artificial Intelligence-guided fragrance that represents the smell of the house
Gary Gautier, general director of Casa Batlló, stated: “Our commitment to digital art continues in the new space casabatllo.io, where new digital sales of collections by guest artists, including Refik Anadol, will be launched shortly, always linked to donations to institutions related to neurodiversity.”
“We live in an age of really advanced technology, but we still don’t know how to properly remember our past and heritage. And I think this project is a great example of the use of history and heritage, combined with technology and the future,” added Artificial Intelligence art specialist Refik Anadol.
“Therefore, one of the reasons why this project is very significant is to respectfully use historical data, but also combine it with future technologies such as AI Data, but also Metaverse, NFT and blockchain. The result is exciting imagination, where past and future truly connect,” he added.
