With historic wins for ‘The Crown’ for Best Drama Series and ‘Lady’s Gambit’ for Best Miniseries, Netflix has had the most wins by any transmission or network service in the 2021 Emmys that were delivered this past dawn. Plus, with its 44 Emmys in one year it equals a record set by CBS in 1974.
Netflix night
On Milestone Night, Apple TV + ‘s magnificent’ Ted Lasso ‘was awarded Best Comedy Series, and for the first time ever, the night’s top three awards, Drama, Comedy and Miniseries, went to the streaming services, what marks the definitive paradigm shift cathodic.
Platforms ruled the night. After Netflix are HBO / HBO Max with 19 awards, Disney + with 14 and Apple TV + with 10 awards. Of the traditional broadcast networks, NBC, powered by ‘Saturday Night Live’, obtained the best mark of the evening with 7 Emmy Awards. CBS, which interestingly aired the Emmy ceremony this year, was excluded entirely from the awards.
The drama and miniseries categories, both for Netflix, closed the night, and is the first time Netflix win a category of that level. Between 2013 and 2020, the platform had accumulated 30 nominations in those categories without ever winning. A resounding success for the largest streaming service, with 209 million subscribers in the world.
Apple TV + was another of the big winners, getting the comedy series award (and 7 other awards) for ‘Ted Lasso’. The victory of the series starring Jason Sudeikis makes the streaming platform fastest to get a win with a series, in just your second year of eligibility. This year’s awards tally showed a major shift from 2020, when HBO topped the list with 30 Emmys and Netflix hunted 21. Following the historic tie in 2018, when both had 23 wins, HBO had reaffirmed itself with a record nominations. stronger than its rival.
HBO Max had a good night with three awards for ‘Hacks’ that together with the two for ‘Mare Of Easttown’ made up a night where he paid the production delays due to Covid, something that deprived HBO of having such important contenders as last year’s great winner, ‘Succession’, or another great favorite always like ‘Barry’. The Emmy 2022 will undoubtedly be a battle like we have never seen.
