Based on a board game titled Cyberpunk 2020, Cyberpunk 2077 gave a lot of people their first look at the dystopian sci-fi universe created by Mike Pondsmith. Despite initial launch problems, sales of Cyberpunk 2077 have since proven the game to be a success, and fans of that universe will be seeing more content soon.
New Cyberpunk stories are on the way in the form of an expansion for Cyberpunk 2077 and Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, an anime limited series from Netflix based on the video game.
Cyberpunk: Edgerunners was initially introduced in 2020. However, since it was first revealed, the anime did not show any major updates for some time. Fast-forward to 2022, and fans got their first proper look at the series via a Cyberpunk: Edgerunners teaser trailer, which showed off a bit of the story without giving too much away.
Now, Netflix has shared on YouTube the opening sequence of the anime, also known as the opening, in addition to offering fans some more details about the plot of the series.
The opening opens with the protagonist of Cyberpunk: Edgerunner standing in the corner of the screen, with text confirming that the series is based on Cyberpunk 2077 and not in the tabletop roleplaying game. Some fans of the original stories created by Mike Pondsmith may be a little disappointed to see this, but it’s worth noting that Edgerunners is also inspired by Pondsmith’s work.
More credits appear in the trailer against a yellow background before silhouettes of buildings begin to emerge. Within these silhouettes, viewers will notice images of Night City, the setting for both Cyberpunk 2077 like from its anime spinoff.
It is difficult to distinguish any detail in the opening, since the images of the places and the characters disappear as soon as they are seen. The only constant is the protagonist of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, who is described by Netflix as a “street kid trying to survive in Night City”.
Although fans can expect that the protagonist of Cyberpunk 2077 is V, especially since both characters share a similar design in the opening, the anime of Netflix introduces an entirely new protagonist named David Martinez.
Remember that Cyberpunk: Edgerunners premieres in September on Netflix.
