Bad news for those of us who were waiting for the next series by Rodrigo Sorogoyen and Isabel Peña, the duo behind ‘Antiriots’. The series about the Civil War that the creators were preparing for Movistar Plus + has been canceledaccording to VerTele.
Announced in March 2021, this thus becomes a very rare example (at least on the platform) of series with green light whose development is stopped abruptly before starting the production phase of it. A shame because it was a very ambitious project.
In addition to being one of the great bets for the future of fiction on the platform, with executives such as Domingo Corral announcing with great fanfare how this is the time to capture a broad perspective of the conflict which, even today, continues to mark Spain eighty years after its completion.
Something that Sorogoyen reaffirmedwhich is currently finishing its episode in ‘Apagón’ for Movistar Plus+:
“The Civil War has fascinated me as an event for a long time. A conflict that has tragically marked the future of our history and that unfortunately was not studied when we were schoolchildren. A conflict that devastated millions of innocents and an entire country in different ways. Creating a fiction where we can move the viewer, but above all trying to understand our characters, our past and present society and, therefore, the times we find ourselves in now is going to be, for sure, the biggest challenge of our career . Trying to understand does not mean justifying, it means knowing. Know so, in many cases, not to repeat the same mistakes. We know the responsibility that this entails. But we assume it with the honesty, rigor and humanity with which we face all our projects»
Towards a whiter Movistar Plus+
On the reason for this cancellation, it is not clear. According to VerTele, “Other sources external to the platform consulted for this decision point to a political motivation.” From Espinof we have contacted Movistar Plus +which at the time of publication of this article has not given a response.
Although we do not know the reasons for this cancellation, the direction that the platform has taken in the last couple of years raises questions the sea of suspicious about the loss of claw and daring by Movistar Plus +.
Among other precedents, we have the cancellation of ‘Kings of the Night’ or the comedians who have protested in the face of the censorship they have suffered, with accusations by Facu Diaz (“Many Vox jokes die in Movistar + offices. We don’t even know who the hell is the one who takes them away»), Bob Pop or Héctor de Miguel, among others, confirmed the little freedom they had.
What we can confirm is that little by little Movistar Plus+ is moving towards whiter, less “edgy” entertainment than when it began almost five years ago with its own television production.
