We are not big fans of this type of study for various reasons, so we will limit ourselves to presenting the conclusions of each one. From there, users should take them as one more indicator when choosing an operator and, if we talk about coverage or speed, they should always prioritize their own experience in the area in which they usually move. In this case, we have the conclusions on mobile speed from studies conducted by the OCU (organization of consumers and users) and by Ookla. Who will win? Movistar, Orange, Vodafone or Yoigo?
Speed studies carried out by independent companies should always be valued in fair measure. In our opinion, they should never be used as a marketing element by the operators and should be another source of information for the user when deciding. Be that as it may, this is not the case and several operators use them to breastfeed for their service.
CoberApp, OCU’s free and collaborative app
The first study is from the OCU and has been carried out with the data collected by CoberApp. As they explain to us, more than 5,000 users 18,434 mobile data upload and download speed measurements have been carried out with this app in the last 12 months, as well as browsing tests or streaming video playback.
The networks analyzed are those of Movistar, Orange, Vodafone and Yoigo. According to the OCU, Movistar It offers the highest connection speed (average between cities and rural areas), as well as the best quality. The blue ones get 32.2 Mbps of download and 10.2 Mbps of upload on average, and that only 19% of Movistar users have suffered delays of more than five seconds when watching YouTube videos.
Orange gets 28.1 Mbps download and 8.9 Mbps upload; Vodafone is left with 25 Mbps downstream and 9.3 Mbps upstream and Yoigo closes the ranking with 22.5 Mbps download and 6.7 Mbps upload. By communities, Madrid is the community with the highest connection speed, followed by Murcia. The lowest speed is in Aragon, Extremadura, the Canary Islands and the Basque Country.
Ookla results in Q3 2021
Now it’s time to review Ookla’s conclusions during the third quarter of 2021 in Spain. According to this firm, Movistar offered the fastest and most consistent mobile experience with a score of 54.30 and a consistency of 88.5%. The first indicator refers to the speed (upload and download) and the second to the quality of the network. Orange is second with 39.48, Vodafone with 36.30 and Yoigo with 30.68.
However, if we focus exclusively on 5G, Vodafone It doesn’t seem to have a rival in Spain when it comes to speed. The red ones get 323.13 Mbps of average download speed, well above the 119.93 of Orange, 113.73 of Yoigo or 100.01 of Movistar. This is because they have only deployed 5G NSA without using techniques such as DSS to increase coverage faster by taking advantage of 4G antennas.
Do the results of the OCU and Ookla correspond to your real experience?
