In the 1960s, the familiar spirit of a Chicago motorcycle community takes an unexpected turn, into a world of brutality and lawlessness, where roads that were once synonymous with unity and freedom could now prove fatal to anyone in a motorcycle jacket. leather. The Vandals Cluba new film distributed by 20th Century Studios, provides a glimpse into those who made two wheels the only purpose and motor of their lives.

Over the years, Kathy tries very hard to deal with her husband’s wild nature and his loyalty to Johnny, with whom she feels she must compete for Benny’s attention. And as life in the Vandals grows more dangerous and the club threatens to become a more sinister gang, Kathy, Benny and Johnny are forced to make decisions about their loyalty to the club and to each other.
The script was written by Jeff Nichols (Loving) who also serves as director of this crime drama. What to expect from the movie?
As stated by Jeff Nichols to Vanity Fairyour intention with The Vandals Club was (in part) to emulate the kind of feeling he got when watching the classic gangster movie Good boys by Martin Scorsese. Not so much at the level of cinematographic language, but of history.
“What fascinates me about Good boys It is that if you look at the narrative structure of the first hour, it is wild because there is no plot, “said the director. “That movie is about what it feels like to be a gangster and it talks about that period of time in that very specific place. That is what I observe Good boys. Cinematic mechanics don’t interest me as much as narrative mechanics.
For more than a decade, the Arkansas-born filmmaker harbored a desire to direct a film about motorcycle riders. In October 2018, Nichols told SlashFilm that although he had not yet written a script, he was still in communication with Danny Lyon —author of the book that inspired The Vandals Club– via email. At the time, he was convinced that he didn’t want to glorify rebellious life on the roads, but rather to talk about the transition between the “golden era” of the motorcycle subculture and the decline towards violence and criminality.
At some point, Lyon shared audio recordings of their rides with Nichols, and Nichols eventually became interested in the true story of a disgraced motorcycle club, told from the perspective of Kathy, the wife of one of its members, who “She was a great observer,” in the director’s opinion.
“There is tension between glorifying them and also understanding and showing them for what they are and what they are not,” he told Vanity Fair. “Kathy handles that tension better than anyone because she sees all the cracks and all the bullshit, but she’s wrapped up in it too.”
