If you are not lucky enough to be enjoying – either online or in person – the Sitges Festival 2021, which already has the machinery active and at full capacity, Spanish cinemas receive this Friday, October 8 a handful of news with some of the most powerful titles of the year, especially with regard to national cinema.
This week, big names like Pedro Almodóvar, Daniel Monzón or the flaming winner of the Palme d’Or Julia Ducournau come to our cinemas to offer us a portion of top quality cinema. We are going to review the main news.

Pedro Almodóvar in front of the mirror: all the references in ‘Pain and glory’ to the life and films of the director
The premieres of October 8, 2021
‘Parallel Mothers’ (2021)
{“videoId”: “x82y3js”, “autoplay”: true, “title”: “‘Parallel Mothers’, trailer for Pedro Almodóvar’s film”}
The incombustible Pédro Almodóvar returns to the charge of the hand of his inseparable Penélope Cruz and shielded by a cast with names of the stature of Milena Smit, Aitana Sánchez-Gijón, Julieta Serrano or Rossy de Palma with this sense melodrama with motherhood as a backdrop that successfully opened the Venice Film Festival 2021.
Criticism in Espinof: ‘Parallel Mothers’: a melodrama sense with the soul of a thriller by Pedro Almodóvar where Penelope Cruz shines
‘The Laws of the Border’ (2021)
{“videoId”: “x83w4x7”, “autoplay”: true, “title”: “The Laws of the Frontier – Featurette (The Story)”}
After making us have a fantastic time with his charming comedy ‘Yucatán’, Daniel Monzón radically changes the register to fully immerse himself in quinqui cinema with ‘Las laws de la frontera’; an adaptation of the homonymous novel by Javier Cercas in which drama, romance, robberies and suspense go hand in hand.
In Espinof: When Álex de la Iglesia said to Daniel Monzón: “With this movie, if you have to give yourself a host, you give it to yourself in a big way”
‘The Addams Family 2: The Great Getaway’ (‘The Addams Family 2’, 2021)
{“videoId”: “x84qfzv”, “autoplay”: false, “title”: “The Addams Family 2 – Official Trailer 2 -“}
The family proposal of the week is led by characters as mythical as those that make up the members of the – worth the redundancy – Addams Family. Conrad Vernon and Greg Tiernan team up again in this animated sequel that will surely please those who enjoyed the previous 3D journey of its protagonists.
‘Titane’ (2021)
{“videoId”: “x824gv7”, “autoplay”: false, “title”: “TITANE (2021) – trailer”}
After sweeping the Cannes Film Festival with the Palme d’Or for best film, and after captivating audiences at the Toronto Film Festival, where he won the award granted by the respectable, ‘Titane’ comes to our cinemas; the unclassifiable new film by a Julia Ducournau that is positioned as one of the most interesting proper names in current fantasy.
Criticism in Espinof: Cannes 2021: ‘Titane’ by Ducournau is the bomb of an edition marked by the fantastic
‘Rescue distance’ (2021)
{“videoId”: “x84ehox”, “autoplay”: false, “title”: “Trailer for ‘Rescue Distance’, by Claudia Llosa”}
From Peru, Claudia Llosa gives us this thriller, based on the novel by Samanta Schweblin, which comes after passing through the San Sebastian Festival, and which invites us to accompany a particularly long-suffering María Valverde in a genre exercise that loses steam progressively.
Criticism in Espinof: San Sebastian Festival 2021 | Netflix chases the Golden Shell with ‘Rescue Distance’
