5 tips for men’s health
Against this backdrop, the WHO has issued 5 essential tips for men’s health:
- Go for periodic check-ups: It is recommended to go to medical check-ups frequently, even if the person feels healthy. The suggested studies are blood pressure measurements, blood glucose tests and, from the age of 50, prostate checks. Mental health is also important to prevent or treat anxiety or depression problems.
- Reduce alcohol consumption: Drinking excessive amounts or too frequently increases the immediate risk of injuries, traffic accidents and violence, as well as causing long-term liver damage, heart disease and even cancer. Harmful use of alcohol can also affect mental health and harms those around the individual.
- Stop smoking: Tobacco causes cancer, lung and heart disease, as well as stroke. Quitting tobacco benefits lung function within 2-12 weeks and, after a year, the risk of developing heart disease will be twice as low as that of a smoker.
- Eat better: Healthy eating helps prevent diabetes and many other diseases. It is necessary to increase the consumption of plain water, fruits, vegetables, legumes, nuts and whole grains, as well as limit the consumption of salt, sugar, fats and ultra-processed foods.
- Exercise: Exercising helps maintain a healthy weight, reduces the risk of heart disease, stroke, diabetes and cancer, and also helps combat depression. The WHO recommends that adults practice moderate-intensity physical activity for at least 2.5 hours a week.
The Health Institute for Wellbeing recommends that all men go to the nearest health unit from the first moment they present signs or symptoms of any illness, so that they receive a timely diagnosis and early care.
