In 2022, the fact that games as a service are hugely successful is no longer surprising, and EA in particular has had considerable success in this niche, even if it wasn’t always the case. Games like Apex Legends and FIFA Ultimate Team have proven time and time again that they are huge moneymakers over long periods of time.
However, according to Geoff Keighley, the success of the game as a service of EA is even more important than some might expect. At the company’s last investor meeting, it was bluntly stated that video game titles as a service were responsible for more than half of the total revenue of EAwhich makes it clear that it will continue to invest in similar projects in the future.
Electronic Arts CEO Andrew Wilson discussed the game publisher’s success in launching and sustaining its various video game-as-a-service titles over the years at the latest earnings call from EAand according to Keighley, Wilson said that 71% of the company’s total income comes from its video game projects as a service.
This shouldn’t come as a surprise after it was announced that Apex Legends won’t be getting a sequel any time soon, as it’s clear that the game is still very profitable for the publisher.
In recent years, video games as a service have become a truly gigantic concept, and the industry is quickly adapting to the idea of continually updating, changing, and even reinventing hit titles to keep gamers coming back. Even companies like Sony have started to lean in this direction, and the CEO of PlayStation is convinced of the success of games as a service in the coming years.
