The end of mission impossible 7 could not be a cliffhanger. That is something that was very clear to the film’s star and producer, Tom Cruise, who did not want the audience to be left on edge until the premiere of Death Judgment – Part Two. For this reason, the film was built from the beginning to close a cycle without the need to include connections with what is to come.
This was stated by the film’s director, Christopher McQuarrie, in a recent interview with Game Radar. During the conversation, she mentioned how the conclusion of the film was something that worried Cruise greatly, to the point of not being able to sleep:
“Where we ended the film was always where we were going to end it. The big mystery for us was how it would end. Tom was not allowed to sleep throughout the production. He would come all the time and say, ‘This can’t be a cliffhanger, it has to be satisfying. The audience has to feel like it’s over.’”
Then there is SPOILERS light of Mission Impossible: Deadly Judgment – Part One
After defeating Gabriel (Esai Morales), one of the many villains, on the roof of the Orient Express, Ethan Hunt says goodbye to his friend Grace (Hayley Atwell) and recovers the key to deactivate the malevolent artificial intelligence known as The Entity. Now, the agent will have to go to deactivate the technology, which has its center in the Sevastopol, a submarine buried at the bottom of the arctic ocean. However, the film doesn’t end with Hunt going into the sea, but rather driving away from him with Benji (Simon Pegg).
Elaborating on the decision, McQuarrie said that Cruise closely supervised the construction of the end of mission impossible 7. This is what the filmmaker recalls:
“Tom kept looking at that scene and worried about whether or not it would be a satisfying conclusion or whether it would be left open. We were constantly revising it, constantly refining it.”
And I add:
“If you leave it with a cliffhanger, it kind of feels like we’re waiting for you to come back. We didn’t want to have that feeling. The feeling we were looking for -and we hope you feel- is that we dare you not to return. We want to leave you thinking, ‘Oh, I can’t wait to see what happens next.'”
