Insecurity is a problem that permeates the world, especially theft in its different forms, retail businesses face a large part of it, being their employees who must face the first contact with criminals, as happened with a 72-year-old cashier who had to defend herself against a man who tried to rob a convenience store located in Westminster, Colorado in the United States.
After she confronted the criminal who, by the way, was armed with a knife, she was unfairly fired for which the woman had to sue the company.
Mary Ann Moreno was working alone at the Circle K chain of convenience stores Sheridan, when a man came in with hunting weapons and demanded a pack of cigarettes and when he was collecting, “he told her to give them to him for free”, she refused and the assailant became “visibly upset”; He walked to the counter area where Mary Ann was standing and from a tobacco products display case tried to extract the packages, the woman raised her hands to “protect herself and prevent the man from approaching her and the merchandise,” the lawsuit says.
Video taken from security cameras shows her touching the man’s arm with both hands while asking him “don’t come back here.” What the older woman said was backed up by a Wetminster Police Department records clerk, who confirmed that the man was accused of having a knife that night. He was arrested and charged with multiple crimes, including aggravated robbery and threatening with a deadly weapon, the legal document states.
After what happened, Mary Ann was very distraught, however, a store supervisor became upset with her and warned her that she would have to be investigated for pushing the man. Two days later she was fired; her legal representative indicated that Mary should not have been penalized. “Companies should value the lives of their employees more and understand that in a situation of physical danger, an employee has the right to defend himself if he is afraid of being attacked,” she said.
The fact that he has lost his job has had negative repercussions for the woman, since he worked for the company for 16 years, since according to the lawsuit “he was extremely loyal and loved his clients”, but what has cost the most work is that her husband passed away years ago and that her work activity was her way of interacting and socializing with the world.
The lawsuit seeks damages for Moreno’s emotional pain and suffering, inconvenience, mental anguish and loss of enjoyment of life, according to the lawsuit.
