The Cyber Police of the city of San Luis de Potosí in Mexico mistakenly believes that cryptocurrency mining with GPU can generate millionaire profits. In fact, this was reported after discovering that one or more people were mining crypto assets in the facilities of the local National College of Technical Professional Education (Conalep).
The Secretariat of Public Security of San Luis Potosí public a statement on Twitter when discovered that someone was secretly mining cryptocurrencies used the facilities, equipment, energy and the Internet of the institution to generate crypto assets.
Local authorities stated that the clandestine activity allegedly “had generated millionaire profits”. For this reason, an investigation was opened to find the whereabouts of those responsible and impose sanctions.
Also the directors of the educational institution They went to the state attorney general’s office to report the incident.according to what was reported by the Secretary of Public Security of San Luis Potosí.
GPU mining of cryptocurrencies generates less than $300 per month
In a graph shared by the security agency, it can be seen that Conalep teams mined cryptocurrencies with video cards (GPU), a hardware widely used to generate ether (ETH) from the Ethereum network, Dash (DASH) and another variety of crypto assets.
According to a recent CriptoNoticias article, ETH is one of the most profitable cryptocurrencies to mine with GPUs, although that depends on the equipment used. For example, mining with an Nvidia CMP 220HX, which has a hashrate (processing power) of 210 MH/s, can earn up to $8.28 daily. It would be about USD 248 per month on average.
Then there is Ravencoin which, in terms of profitability, can generate profits of up to USD 2 per day, for USD 64 per month with maintenance costs. But again it is clarified that this depends on the GPU that is used to carry out mining.
There are also other GPU mined cryptocurrencies that are relatively profitable, but none allows to generate millionaire profits as mentioned by the police authorities of San Luis Potosí. What could have happened is that people turned to cryptocurrency mining as an extra activity.
Interestingly, this week, news has circulated that Conalep teachers have protested in claim for the homologation of salaries with respect to the other higher education systems that depend on the State, according to reported the local media.
Conalep is an educational institution in Mexico whose objective is to provide upper secondary education and at the same time train technical professionals in 54 careers. In the 300 schools that are deployed throughout the country, technicians are trained in administration, accounting, industrial electricity, computing and other careers, although perhaps it would be a good time to include education related to cryptocurrencies.
“At a certain point, mining cryptos in a Conalep, in some way gives a feeling of pride”, he pointed a person on Twitter. There is also someone believe that this activity should be supported instead of condemning it.
