Mexico occupies the fourth position in the list of minimum wages in Latin America, according to estimates from Bloomberg Linebased on the price of the dollar in effect on January 3.
One of the many problems that came with the health emergency and its inevitable confinement was the dismissal of millions of people around the world. In fact, in April 2020 alone, a month after the pandemic was decreed worldwide, a loss of 195 million full-time jobs was estimated.
Today, given the imminent advance of the Omicron variant, the situation seems to be further from improving, which is why various authorities have called on the population to continue taking care of themselves, not to go out if not necessary and, above all, take care of the the rest.
However, even though the situation with Covid-19 is not fully controlled, life on the streets has returned to what is known as the “new normal” and jobs are beginning to be reactivated.
Based on this premise and with an eye on the years to come, in Mexico, the government of Andrés Manuel López Obrador announced that the minimum wage would increase from 141.70 to 172.87 Mexican pesos per daywhich is equivalent to about 256 US dollars per month.
Mexico was not the only country, but Brazil has done the same by increasing the minimum wage a little more than 10% to reach 1,212 reais, equivalent to about 214 dollars; however, despite this increase, it is one of the lowest minimum wages in Latin America.
According to an analysis by Statista, Ecuador is the country in Latin America with the highest minimum wage, with an amount of 425 dollars per month in January 2022.
Chile is another of the countries that has guaranteed its workers one of the highest minimum wages in the region, with a total of 411 dollars per month, according to the latest data from the Work address.
For its part, Venezuela stands out for its extreme difference from the rest, since its minimum wage is ten digital bolivars, which is equivalent to about 2.18 dollars and with which a citizen of that country can barely buy a dozen of eggs or half a kilo of ground meat, according to what the Bloomberg Line portal points out.
