The cryptocurrency industry has been growing in recent years, and along with it also its by-products or services such as Smart Contracts, Decentralized Finance and non-fungible tokens (NFTs).
These last ones have become popular thanks to the fact that they function as a type of digital contract, which gives exclusivity to practically any digital content, guaranteeing that there can be no other version like it on the web.
Its implementation has been carried out both in works of art, such as music, images, and other articles and video games could not be left behind. Nevertheless, not everyone is in favor of this type of token and one of its main detractors is Mojang Studios, the developer of the popular Microsoft game, Minecraft.
Minecraft bans NFTs from the game
Through a post on his official blog titled “Minecraft and NFTs“, the study noted:
“We wanted to take the opportunity to share our opinion that NFT integrations with Minecraft are generally not something we will support or allow.yes”.
In its publication Mojang Studios pointed out that Both NFTs and other blockchain products will not be allowed in your title and therefore will not be compatible with Minecraft.
“To ensure that Minecraft players have a safe and inclusive experience, blockchain technologies are not allowed to be integrated within our client and server applications, nor can Minecraft game content such as worlds, skins, personal items be used. or other modifications made by blockchain technology to create a scarce digital asset”Mojang said.
This based on the essence of the NFTwhich are unique products, which could have the potential to start dividing the Minecraft community by separating them into those who have “X” item and those who don’t.
NFTs encourage inequality
Mojang Studios stressed that part of the guidelines and spirit of Minecraft is to ensure that Minecraft remains a community where everyone has access to the same content.and this is something that could be compromised with the arrival of NFTs, since part of their qualities are scarcity and exclusion.
For example, if a player owns the NFT for a pickaxe that looks like a lightsaber, that player can declare that they are the legal owner of the original lightsaber pickaxe.
Likewise, Mojang pointed out that some firms have developed “iNFT implementations associated with world files and Minecraft skin packst”, as well as noting that there are possibly “collectible” Minecraft NFTs out there or the possibility that gamers could be earning NFTs by doing things in Minecraft on a server or by earning them outside of the actual game.
That being said, Mojang was very explicit in indicating that NFTs go against their values of cooperation and collaboration in the game, given that non-fungible tokens are, as already mentioned, extremely rare collectibles by nature which therefore they foster scarcity and digital exclusion.
“NFTs do not include our entire community and create a rich-poor scenario”, he indicated Mojang and I add “In our Minecraft Usage Guidelines, we describe how a server owner can charge for access and that all players must have access to the same functionality. We have these rules to ensure that Minecraft remains a community where everyone has access to the same content.”.
Could this position change?
In addition to encouraging disunity within Minecraft, Mojang also pointed out other problems that NFTs have caused, such as those related to quality control, cases of fraud and NFTs sold at exaggerated values.
However, there is still a small window of opportunity left for non-fungible tokens, as Mojang said it would pay “close attention” to how the technology evolves.
“We have no plans to implement blockchain technology in Minecraft at this time.“, they stressed.
Mojang’s position is very bold, especially since it is very clear that the title is extremely popular and modifiable. The 10-year-old game has sold no less than $238 million copies according to Statista data, which makes Minecraft the best-selling video game in history, beating great competitors such as Super Mario, The Legend of Zelda , Street Fighter or Sonic.
The reason? The game has a lot of appeal: it’s simple, easy to play, and hugely flexible.
