Free to play games have become in recent years an enormously popular and lucrative sector within the video game industry, thanks to Battle Passes and all kinds of cosmetic micropayments, but there are those who think that they can still get more match these games that gather millions of players. Microsoft would be working on an advertising system capable of displaying ads in free to play games.
According to a report from Business Insider, it is an “in-game advertising program” for free games on Xbox platforms. For example, that in a racing game, the billboards show real brands. Microsft would be aware that these advertising mechanisms can be counterproductive, so it would be studying ways to make advertising as less intrusive as possible for the player.
It would also come to affirm that no personal data of platform users would be shared with advertisers and that it would not charge any type of commission for the income generated. This program would be in development since the premiere of Xbox Series X | S and would have a launch planned for the third quarter of 2022, so there could be some sort of announcement coming soon. Although it is not a very user-friendlylet’s say.

As scandalous as it may seem, the truth is that advertising has become a common tool of modern games. Whether it is the same company announcing one of its other games, as in the case of Ubisoft, or the well-known product placement from Energizer batteries from Alan Wake or Monster cans from Death Stradingwhich were removed in the Director’s Cut version of PS5.
