With the release of the new generation consoles, one of the great promises of Sony and microsoft was the shorten loading times. This has been the case, going from waiting minutes on Xbox One to just seconds on Xbox Series X. It is precisely in this that the so-called Xbox Velocity Architecture has been used, which we know today as Direct Storage API.
Finally Microsoft has announced its arrival on PC, which means water in May for users. However, it is still too soon to feel its effects, since specifically they are developers who can make use of the SDK package with the tools to work with this technology.
Regarding the necessary requirements to get the most out of the DirectStorage API, Microsoft points out that it is possible to take advantage of it with Windows 10 installed on our system, but it will be with Windows 11 when we can see its full performance. The only requirement at the moment of truth will be to have a NVMe SSD drive, PCIe 3.0 and a DirectX 12 compatible graphics card Ultimate.
There is already a game that has been postulated as the first to make use of the DirectStorage API. That has been Forspoken, the Square Enix title that has recently announced a delay in its launch of several months. On the other hand, Microsoft invites us to GDC 2022 to learn more details about using this system on PC.
