The technology giant Microsoft announced this Monday that exactly one year from now – August 17, 2021 – Microsoft 365 applications and services will no longer be compatible with Internet Explorer 11 (IE 11).
From this date, the Internet browser, first launched in 1995, will no longer be compatible with Microsoft online services such as Office 365, OneDrive, Outlook. Additionally, Microsoft will also remove IE11 support with the Microsoft Teams web application on November 30.
However, this does not necessarily mean that the browser will disappear completely , as it will continue to work on the Windows 10 operating system for a time (not specified by Microsoft), with companies being able to access sites created specifically for the browser.
“While we know this change will be difficult for some customers, we believe that they will get the most out of Microsoft 365 when they use the new Microsoft Edge. We are committed to helping make this transition as smooth as possible,” the announcement reads.
In addition to Internet Explorer, the company will also retire the legacy version of Edge, the pre-Chromium version. As of March 9, 2021, the old Edge will no longer receive security updates.
