Bad news for Microsoft employees. The company has decided to carry out a round of layoffs covering just under 1,000 employees in all existing departments, as pointed out by Business Insider. The number of workers, in July, amounted to 180,000 people worldwide.
The sources consulted by the media point out that some of them had only been at Microsoft for a month when they were recently hired. In the month of July itself, the board announced that less than 1% of its workforce would be laid off, which would also lead to less involvement in the hiring section in the face of the future recession.
It’s unclear whether these layoffs are in line with Microsoft’s plans, but a spokesperson said “like all companies, we regularly assess our business priorities and we make the corresponding structural adjustments. We will continue to invest in our business and hire in key growth areas in the coming year.”
Xbox, among those affected
As we said, Xbox is one of the divisions that is affected by this cut in staff. It’s not clear how many staff have lost their jobs, but it is clear that Studio Alpha will be saying goodbye. This is the Microsoft team that has focused in recent years on creating war game simulations.
Some of your projects will be “deprioritized”, even those that are underway. Studio Alpha was framed in the Mission Engineering department and Zach Kramer, head of the same, has indicated that Microsoft must “make concessions since resources are not unlimited and time is the shortest of all.”
Greg Chapman, Principal Architect for the Studio Alpha team, revealed that “my entire team was laid off today. 12 years here at Microsoft and 25 in game development.”
