The arrival of the new consoles (or perhaps we should speak of multimedia centers) is favoring developers to apply improvements in the development of their corresponding titles and in the case of Microsoft, the company is already testing with a significant image improvement betting on another way to offer HDR.
It is about the arrival of titles that offer support to use Dolby Vision and thus significantly improve the image on the screen. So far, Microsoft’s next-gen consoles offer games with HDR10 and the arrival of Dolby Vision is the logical step.
Dolby Vision and HDR10
Dolby Vision is the rival system of HDR10, one of the most established on the market that over time has seen alternatives such as HDR10 + arrive. Microsoft is preparing to bring it to its new consoles and is already using it in test mode before a general release on the Xbox Series X and Series S.
For now and as they have published in Xboxdynasty, it is a test and the use of Dolby Vision is limited to games that are compatible with HDR and is also limited to the use of 60 Hz on the screen, so it cannot be applied to games that support 120 Hz.
It is the expected step because already in September 2020, Dolby and Microsoft announced that their two new consoles would be the first to offer support for games with Dolby Vision image enhancement as a complement to the HDR10 that we have been using from the beginning.
Dolby Vision support has been initiated by Microsoft for users who are part of the Alpha ring of its testing program for both consoles. A test system that requires prior registration and that offers advance access to improvements and news that will later reach the general version.
Keep in mind that both machines already had access to video playback with Dolby Vision, either through streaming platforms with compatible content, or in physical format when using UHD Blu-ray.
For now, games with Dolby Vision are still in development, but it is expected that they will reach the generality of users throughout 2021, although for now there is no specific date.
