Microsoft and Bungie were unable to reach an agreement before Sony’s entry into the talks.
It was announced yesterday PlayStation’s purchase of Bungie for $3.6 billion, a deal that would have been months in the making rather than an immediate response to Microsoft’s purchase of Activision-Blizzard. In fact, the latest rumors suggest that the very Microsoft also tried to buy Bungie before this latest deal with Sony.
According to Nate the Hate, a leaker also known as Direct-Feed Games, in response to Jeff Grubb, he assured through his Twitter account that Microsoft spent several years in talks with Bungie to acquire the studio, but in 2020 the negotiations completely ended when they did not reach an agreement that pleases both parties.
According to the insider, Bungie was asking back then 2,000 million dollars and continue to operate independently, similar to the terms of purchase by Sony but for less money than it has cost them. It must have seemed like too much money to Microsoft at the time, because they finally called off the negotiations. Recall that in 2020 Microsoft also announced the purchase of Zenimax (Bethesda) for more than 7,500 million dollars. It would be nice to know which deal came first.
Microsoft & Bungie have had talks on & off for a couple of years.
Back in 2020, talks stalled between the two due to Bungie wanting in the area of $2bn and to retain independence.
That request paired with the asking price was too high for MS, at the time.

It is possible that after spending so much money for Zenimax, which has dozens of IPs and several studios, Bungie, only with Destiny, seemed too expensive. It seems that Sony has not had so many objections, I would have almost doubled the offer with kisses 3,600 million. We’ll see how this deal between Bungie and Sony translates from now on.
