The state of Michoacán signed up this Monday as a possible destination for the installation of the new Tesla electric vehicle plant, in a dispute that also includes northern Nuevo León and central Hidalgo.
“The governor (of the state) Alfredo Ramírez Bedolla announced that Michoacán presented his proposal to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE) so that the new Tesla plant can be installed in the state,” the government of said entity said in a statement.
The request comes after the Mexican president, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, confirmed this morning that the company of magnate Elon Musk will install a plant in the country.
According to the Mexican president, The new Tesla plant will be located near its most recent flagship work, the “Felipe Ángeles” International Airport (AIFA), in the state of Hidalgo.
López Obrador questioned that the production of electric vehicles is carried out in Nuevo León, as the governor of this entity, Samuel García, claims, since he criticized that in said demarcation in the north of Mexico there is a lack of water.
In this sense, the governor of Michoacán assured the Mexican Foreign Ministry, which leads the dialogues with the company of the also owner of Twitter, that this state in the west of the country “It has sufficient clean energy, water resources and an unbeatable logistics position.”.
Ramírez explained that Michoacán has at least two suitable places to host the new Tesla plant.
One of them, of 640 hectares, on the Island of La Palmabelonging to the Mexican Secretary of the Navy and which manages the port of Lázaro Cárdenas, one of the most important in the country and which only in 2022 increased its export of vehicles by 30%.
The other zone could be in the bajio parkwhich has 440 hectares and is located on the Mexico-Guadalajara highway, in the Queréndaro Station, which, he said, “has railroad tracks that come from Lázaro, with direct access to the federal highway and 7 kilometers from the airport.”
The Governor of Michoacán said that Parque Bajío alone has one million cubic meters a year, “something that other states do not have.”
In addition, he stressed that the port of Lázaro Cárdenas is the main connection between the North American and Asian markets, “so it is a serious candidate to be the headquarters of Tesla, as well as other world-class firms.”
