“It had everything I need when I make a movie. […] I just wanted to make a sports movie. I’ve never made one before. I love movies about sports. And I love loser stories. Most of my films are about family and about people who don’t fit in,” mentioned the winner of the Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay for jojo rabbit.
Production team and cast
In addition to directing, Taika Waititi co-wrote the script with Iain Morris (What we do in the shadows). The New Zealand filmmaker once again collaborates with cinematographer Lachlan Milne (hunting wild) and composer Michael Giacchino (jojo rabbit). Waititi also serves as producer alongside Brett, Jamison, Garrett Basch and Jonathan Cavendish.
On the other hand, the cast of the feature film will be led by Michael Fassbender as the coach in charge of transforming the football team. Along with him we will see Elisabeth Moss, Will Arnett, Uli Latukefu, Rhys Darby, Oscar Kightley, David Fane, Lehi Falepapalangi, Semu Filipo, Rachel House, Angus Sampson, Frankie Adams, Beulah Koale, Sisa Grey, Russell Satele, Karim Benz and Chris Aloso.
Fassbender is Known for darker, more serious and even villainous roles in films such as Steve Jobs (2015) or the sagas of Alien and X Men as the android David/Walter and the mutant Magneto, respectively. However, Waititi believes that the actor fits perfectly with the comedic tone of Goal wins:
“Not many people know this, it’s extremely funny. Personally, I think he needs to do more comedies. I was taking a break at the time… but, he read the script. “He loved it and decided to finish his sabbatical to come work with me,” explained the director of Thor: Love and Thunder.
