Francis Suarez, who has served as mayor of Miami since 2017, said he would receive his next salary payment in Bitcoin.
In a tweet on November 2, Suarez said who intended to become the first American legislator at the state or federal level to receive part of his salary in Bitcoin (BTC). Public records show that the Mayor of Miami’s salary was $ 97,000 annually between 2016 and 2017, which means that he would receive a monthly check for more than $ 8,000 or 0.13 BTC at a BTC price of $ 63,404, assuming residents they will not vote to increase their compensation for public service. Suarez said that instead of the local government making the effort to convert his dollar check into BTC, I’d prefer use an app like Bitwage or Strike.

I’m going to receive my next 100% Bitcoin payment … problem solved! Mike Sarasti, can you help me?
The statement came on the morning of Election Day in the United States. Although many federal office seats will not open until the 2022 midterm elections, state and local office positions, including the mayor of Miami, will be up for a vote. Suarez is the favorite among six nonpartisan candidates.
Mayor Suarez, who has said he owns both BTC and Ether (ETH), has been very open about his intention to turn Miami into a crypto hub with “the most progressive crypto laws” in the United States. Many companies and events in the crypto space have moved to the area, including the Bitcoin 2021 conference and the venture capital firm Borderless Capital, which has launched a $ 25 million fund to support city-based blockchain startups.
Some mayors of other American cities have also pushed for the adoption of cryptocurrencies or support digital assets in policy or practice. In August, Mayor Jayson Stewart of Cool Valley, Missouri, proposed giving away more than $ 1 million in BTC to the city’s roughly 1,500 residents. New York mayoral candidate Eric Adams has also said he plans to make the city “the hub of Bitcoins.” Adams is also running for election today.
