The National Water Commission (Conagua) announced that almost 50% of Mexico experiences drought based on the Drought monitor of the national territory as of July 31. However, the report was published on August 4. However, the rainy season is about to start and September is expected to be the rainiest month. Next, we present the list of states most affected in August, as well as the classification of the intensity of the drought.
The Drought Intensity classification according to the North American Drought Monitor (NADM), defines 5 degrees of intensity, abnormally dry (D0), moderate (D1), severe (D2), extreme (D3) and exceptional drought. (D4). Next, we detail the characteristics of each one.
It is a condition of dryness. It occurs at the beginning or at the end of a dry period and can cause a delay in the sowing of annual crops, a limited growth of crops or pastures, in addition to the risk of fires, water deficits can also persist and the pastures or crops may not fully recover.
In this stage there is some damage to crops and pastures, in addition, there is a high risk of fires, low levels in rivers, streams, reservoirs, troughs and wells. In this Drought Intensity category, voluntary restriction in the use of water is suggested.
In this stage there are probable losses in crops or pastures, high risk of fires and water scarcity is common, so it is recommended to impose restrictions on the use of water.
In this category of extreme drought, there are greater losses in crops and pastures, the risk of forest fires is extreme, and restrictions on the use of water are generalized due to its scarcity.
- Exceptional Drought (D4):
In the exceptional drought stage there are exceptional and widespread losses of crops or pastures, exceptional risk of fires, total scarcity of water in reservoirs, streams and wells. An emergency situation is also likely due to the absence of water.
