Mexico will recover the Area security category 1 of the United States Federal Aviation Administration (FAA, in English) after two years of having lost it, the Mexican president, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, announced this Friday.
Good news, yesterday unofficially, because they are going to carry out the procedure next week, they have already informed the Secretary of Foreign Affairs, Alicia Bárcena. The Secretary of Transportation (Pete Buttigieg) of the United States Government spoke with her to inform her that they have already decided to deliver the Category 1“,
the president revealed in his daily press conference.
The FAA demoted in May 2021 to Category 2 Mexico’s air safety rating for not complying with the standards of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO)a classification it shares with countries such as Pakistan, Thailand, Ghana, Malaysia and Bangladesh.
The decision prevented opening new services and routes to the United States, while US companies were prohibited from sharing seats with flights operated by Mexico, which affected the competitiveness of the Mexico City International Airport (AICM).
“So it’s good news, that they are going to formalize it next week, we are very grateful to the Secretary of Transportation of the United States, we are very grateful to President (Joe) Biden,”
commented López Obrador.
The recovery of the category occurs after the visit of Buttigieg last June, when he went to the Felipe Angeles International Airport (AIFA)López Obrador’s emblematic work for the Mexican capital, inaugurated last year.
The president sought to regain the category to boost the AIFA, which only transported 912,415 national and international passengers in 2022, 62% below his goal of 2.4 million. Master Development Plan.
All the requirements were met and that is why they have decided to return to Mexico, in the case of the airport, to have that category. “This is also a sign, a sign, that relations are very good,”
López Obrador highlighted.
