Mexico is the Latin American country with the most digital nomads and the second on the continentbehind only the United States, revealed Monday an analysis by the firm Restart, specialized in providing computer technology.
The country with the most nomads globally is the United States with around 15 million, and in Latin America, Mexico is the leader, with Brazil closely behind,” explained Restart’s general director for Mexico and Latin America, Eduardo López Macías, in a statement.
In fact, he specified Since the Covid-19 pandemic, the number of digital nomads in the country has tripledas those who travel to another city or country to telework are called.
These remote workers enter Mexico as tourists and here they do their work and life, but they are not registered with the Treasury, some are 90 days, leave for a few days and return again, “added López Macías.
The manager said that these workers “can be a source of tax revenue such as ISR (income tax) but they are outside the Treasury’s radar.”
It is difficult to know the exact number, but you only have to see neighborhoods in Mexico City, like Roma or Condesa, everywhere there are foreigners in public places with their computers working,” he said.
The expert explained that after the pandemic “a boom in digital nomads was generated, who can do remote work” in Mexico.
Mexico attracted many digital nomads and ranks as the Latin American country with the most foreign workers in this category residing in the country, a figure that tripled during the pandemic,” he said.

An estimate by Restart, a company of Ukrainian origin with headquarters in Germany that began operations in Mexico this year, indicated that “There may be more than 90,000 foreigners residing in Mexico under the concept of digital nomads”whose spending could exceed 1,000 million dollars.
Many of these foreigners arrive in cities such as Mexico City, Guadalajara and Monterrey, the main cities where they reside”, he pointed out.
The figures, the manager pointed out, “are an estimate” of the company he runs, since there are no official statistics or migration authorities, the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi) or any other source.
To calculate the growing number of digital nomads, López Macías highlighted that an average of 8,000 remote job offers per week are registered on the Linkedin platform and many of these vacancies are published in English because the companies that offer them are in the United States.
According to global estimates, there are 35 million digital nomads in the worldof which 15 million are in the United States.
1.6 million Americans live in Mexico, according to the US State Department, many of whom arrived during the Covid-19 pandemic.
This is because Mexico eased the restrictions and a severe confinement to free transit was not applied as in other countries, and this led to the figures tripling during the pandemic,” said the Restart representative.
Restart is in charge of providing computers configured with the specifications of the companies for their employees to work remotely in Mexico and they deliver the equipment to the worker at home.
For the second half of the year, Restart plans to invest 9 million dollars.
The firm pointed out that the Government of Mexico City has promoted the attraction of digital nomads. In October 2022, it signed an agreement with the Airbnb platform and UNESCO to promote the capital as a destination for digital nomads globally.
A foreigner who earns 4,000 dollars (about 70,000 pesos) can have a good standard of living in Mexico paying a rent in the thriving Condesa neighborhood of about 20,000 pesos (about 1,160 dollars).
In 2022, an inflow of money of 9,300 million pesos (541 million dollars) was generated exclusively for Mexico City, measured by tourist spending, which includes the contribution generated by digital nomads,” he concluded.
