According to the statement of the Ministry of Health (SSA), The new regulation contemplates the prohibition of all forms of advertising, promotion and sponsorship of tobacco, through any means of communication and dissemination, including the direct and indirect display of tobacco products at points of sale.
One hundred percent smoke and emission-free spaces are also expanded in any workplace, spaces for collective gatherings such as squares, parks, beaches, stadiums, as well as in public transport and schools at all educational levels, including universities. .
The new provisions of the regulation ensure a greater degree of protection of people’s health and prioritize the best interests of children, through the application of measures that allow the reduction of the demand for tobacco and nicotine, promote the denormalization of consumption and will generate great public health benefits.
The new forecasts were proposed by the Ministry of Health based on the best scientific evidence available and the best international practices, emanating from the Framework Convention of the World Health Organization for Tobacco Control, to which Mexico has been a party since 2004.
The SSA anticipates that with these measures more than 49,000 premature deaths and 292,000 new cases of diseases associated with smoking will be avoided in the next 10 years. It should be noted that the new regulation enters into force on January 15, 2023.
