Mexico registered more than 1.1 million deaths during 2021, the main causes being COVID-19, heart disease and diabetes mellitus, as reported on Wednesday by the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi).
Of the total of 1,122,249 deaths registered during 2021, 57.6% were men, 42.3% women and in 735 cases the sex was not specified.
Most of these deaths they concentrated on people aged 65 and over, with a total of 618,327 cases (59.59%).
The Inegi specified that a rate of deaths registered for every 10,000 inhabitants of 88, higher by 2 units than that corresponding to 2020.
According to the historical series, this is the second time that such a high figure has been reported.
This is because in 2011, when the registry began, 590,693 people died, a figure that gradually rose to 747,784 in 2019, and skyrocketed in 2020, reaching 1,076,417.
The Inegi specified that there was an excess mortality of 704,358 people from January 2020 to December 2022, 47.2% more than expected for the same previous period, when it was estimated that there would be 1,490,355 deaths and in reality 2,194,713 deaths occurred.
Causes of death
During 2021, 1,037,551 deaths were due to diseases and problems related to Health.
While homicides totaled 35,700, accidents 34,604, suicides 8,432 and events of undetermined intent 5,898.
The latter are characterized by the fact that the certificate states that it lacks elements to classify the death in any of the previous categories.
Homicides are the eighth cause of death in the general population and the sixth cause of death in men, who register 31,263 murders, almost all of the cases.
According to the Inegi, there was a drop in murders, going from 36,773 in 2020 to 35,700 in 2021.
The data provided by the inegi confirm that in Mexico there is a gap between the deaths from covid that has been reported by the Health Secretary against reports of excess mortality, both general and associated with the coronavirus.
