The heat wave that whips Mexico extends this Wednesday, when 22 of the 32 territorial entities of the country expect temperatures higher than 40 degrees Celsius, according to the National Meteorological Service (SMN).
The heat has surprised states in the south of the country, such as Oaxaca, where 200 head of cattle and a minor have died due to temperatures that reach up to 42 degrees, particularly in regions of the Papaloapan Basin, Coast, Tehuantepec Isthmus and Central Valleys.
Cutberto Ruiz Jarquín, from the department of risks and meteorology of the State Coordination of Civil Protection of Oaxaca, estimated that the current warm wave has not reached historical values, but an unusual behavior due to the number of days.
This third heat wave has already been presenting for almost 10 days. What does it mean? That there have been more hot days and that generates, of course, a problem of water stress in the plants, problems of water shortages and some heat strokes ”,
warned in an interview with EFE.
The heat wavewhich is defined as a period of at least three consecutive days above average, has placed Mexico as one of the hottest regions in the Western Hemisphere this week.
In Oaxaca, in the municipality of Loma Bonita, the first death due to heat stroke was registered, although at the national level it is estimated that there are six deaths.
Argelia Julián Aquino, from the Department of Prevention and Prevention of the Oaxaca Health Secretariat, explained that the deceased person is a minor under 17 years of age who worked in pineapple fields.
Unfortunately, this person was working in the pineapple fields, apparently the temperatures at that time are very high and the necessary precautions were not taken in light of the warning that is issued due to high temperatures.”

Affected schools
Due to the persistence of the heat, some teachers have taken measures to protect their students, such as Pablo Julián Martínez, who left his school to rehearse with the school band and the civic escort with his group in the park.
The school does not have a roof, so we went out into this corridor to be able to rehearse, to cover ourselves a little from the sun and not to insolate the boys and work more comfortably ”,
the professor, with more than 20 years of service, told EFE.
The effects of extreme heat in the capital of Oaxaca are seen in public parks, such as Paseo Juárez El Llano, Jardín Conzatti and in the tourist walkway, where few people walk outside the shade of trees and buildings.
