- Amazon ranks second in terms of consumer preference in Mexico, but it is the one with the highest satisfaction rate, above Mercado Libre.
- IFT estimates say that, by 2022, in Mexico, 75 percent of households will have access to the Internet.
A recent study by the Federal Institute of Telecommunications has revealed, among other interesting data, that Mexicans buy more from Mercado Libre than from Amazon, but it has the highest satisfaction rate.
Undoubtedly, what has happened since March of last year, when the Covid-19 pandemic was decreed worldwide, has been one of those events that marked history forever, which is why consumers developed new habits and are carrying out several significant changes around the world.
One of them, among a long list, is the adoption of a much broader digital life; If before we already lived in a hybrid world, now, after the arrival of the pandemic, this had a much greater acceleration and, although reluctantly for some, it was time to learn more than necessary to survive in an era where digital, more than a luxury, became a necessity at first hand.
Starting from this premise, society at a global level, accustomed to old consumption habits, adapted to something that had been making a lot of noise for several years, eCommerce, and that thanks to the effects derived from the presence of Covid-19 had great growth.
According to data from Statista, in 2020, the percentage of consumers who made at least one purchase online in the previous 12 months grew to 72 percent of the population in the US, 79 percent in the UK, and 64 percent. percent in China.
Now, according to estimates of the Statista Digital Market Outlook, everything indicates that this market will register increasing figures year after year. Thus, from 2021 to 2025, revenue from digital commerce to final consumers will go from nearly 3.3 billion dollars registered this year to more than 4.2 billion in 2025.
On the other hand, the effects of the pandemic were also reflected in the rise of digitization throughout the world. In this sense, the number of internet users also underwent significant changes, especially in Mexico, where, according to information from Statista, in 2021, around 84.5 million people in Mexico had access to the internet, a figure that represents an increase of three million with respect to the number of registered users in 2020. In addition, it is forecast that by 2025 there will be approximately 95.3 million Mexicans with access to the network.
Similarly, estimates from the Federal Institute of Telecommunications, in its study “Forecasts of Telecommunications Services”, state that, by 2022, 75 percent of households in Mexico will have access to the Internet.
Thus, taking this series of data into account, habits such as online shopping will continue to grow over the next few years, especially if we consider that the end of the pandemic still seems far away.
Currently, Mercado Libre, one of the most powerful eCommerce platforms, has a large consumer niche in Mexico. According to the study by the Federal Institute of Telecommunications, the online shopping site originating in Argentina has a 63.7 percent preference among Mexican users, more than double that of Amazon.
On the other hand, Facebook’s eCommerce platform, Marketplace, ranks third in the study conducted by the IFT, while self-service stores, such as Walmart, Sam’s Club and Costco, rank fourth, followed by department stores such as Liverpool, Palacio de Hierro and Suburbia.
Another of the interesting data that the IFT revealed is that, although it is true that Mercado Libre is the preferred platform of Mexicans, the reality is that Amazon has the highest satisfaction rate.
