The Government of Mexico had officially started the clinical studies of Patria since April 2021when he promised that the drug would be ready by the end of that year, but faced obstacles in finding volunteers.
The vaccine is ready two years later after a public and private investment of 973 million pesos with viral vector technologyl, exposed Álvarez-Buylla.
This implies, he presumed, a cost 88% lower than the average of other vaccines against Covid-19.
Already having this platform opens the way for us to recover vaccine sovereignty, which is so important for disease prevention. This is thanks to the conjunction of public capacities of several universities and public entities”, indicated the official.
The production plants are still awaiting regulatory authorization from the Federal Commission for Protection against Sanitary Risks (Cofepris).
Patria will be produced thanks to the collaboration of Avimex, a company that is mainly dedicated to drugs for animals, added the director of Conacyt.
Having the possibility, in addition, of already having production plants that are in the process of regulatory authorization by Cofepris to have enough vaccines, and also having the base not only for this already approved booster vaccine but also for other vaccines ”, commented.
Mexico accumulates almost 334,000 deaths from Covid-19, the fifth highest number in the world.
The Government has applied more than 225 million vaccines to about 99 million people, so that at least 77.5% of the population has received at least one dose, according to Johns Hopkins University.
But President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, who has been critical of the interests of pharmaceutical companies, has resisted buying booster vaccines from companies such as Pfizer and Moderna, so the additional doses applied so far have been from the Cuban company Abdala.
