- A graduate of La Salle University, a Mexican doctor is now interim dean of a prestigious university in the United States.
- As part of his career, he was part of the advisory team during the 2009 H1N1 influenza pandemic.
- He is currently leading various investigations and has published in the world’s leading scientific journals.
It is not a secret that the field of health is one of the most competitive. There are many people interested in this field and it takes a lot of perseverance to be able to stand out at the national level. At the same time, a Mexican doctor not only achieved it but is now ranked among the best in the world. Because of his hard work, he now has a new position at one of the most prominent universities on the planet.
To begin with, according to the National Institute of Statistic and Geography (Inegi) until 2020 there was a record of just over 300,000 doctors throughout the national territory. The number may seem large or small from the point of view in which it is analyzed. The truth is that to finish the degree and enter the professional field requires a lot of effort.
In Mexico it takes at least 7 years to graduate from university but some continue their preparation in different ways. The most common is through a specialty but first it is necessary to pass the National Examination of Applicants for Medical Residencies (ENARM).
Now, although there are many renowned hospitals and Institutes in Mexico, you can also access centers in other countries. The doors are open but it is necessary to meet requirements such as a high average, proficiency in an additional language and letters of recommendation, among others.
Mexican doctor stands out abroad
A case that shows that you can succeed and reach the top is the Dr. Carlos del Rio. I study in the La salle university and did his social service in the National Institute of Nutrition “Salvador Zubirán”. Later he studied the specialty of Internal Medicine at the Emory University of Atlanta and also has studies in Infectious Diseases at the same institution.
As part of his professional work, he has been Secretary of Foreign Affairs of the National Academy of Medicine, Vice President of the Infectious Diseases Society of America, and member of the UNAIDS Scientific and Technical Advisory Committee.
During the 2009 H1N1 pandemic, it was member of WHO and CDC advisory teams. And during the COVID-19 pandemic, he led various investigations and publications in the world’s leading scientific journals.
At the same time, he has also maintained a close relationship with the Emory University where he has served as a professor at the Faculty of Medicine for more than 30 years. He is also co-director and principal investigator of the Emory AIDS Research Center.

But now the Mexican doctor has achieved a new distinction that very few of his colleagues have achieved. Emory University made it official that Dr. del Río was named interim dean of that institution. He will occupy this new position from March 1, 2023 to replace Dr. Vikas Sukhatme.
Doctors who raise the name of Mexico
In this way, his story is reminiscent of that of other health professionals who have crossed borders such as Dr. Alejandro Madrigal Fernández. To this day he is considered a world leader in immunotherapy. His work has allowed great advances in cell therapy and could be applied to the area of gerontological biotechnology.
In fact, in 2022 he achieved an international achievement that very few can boast. He was awarded an Order of the British Empire by Queen Elizabeth II for services in hematology.
For now, Dr. Carlos del Río is another outstanding Mexican doctor. His work is not only recognized in our country but also in other nations.
