These days there has been much speculation regarding the potential and future of the metaverse. Arguments for and against its success abound in the mouths of an infinity of “experts” who speak from the particular and therefore very limited experiences. However, to evaluate and project future scenarios in any field, it is essential to go to sources with a proven track record in the development of studies, which are formulated from hundreds and even thousands of cases in multiple industries around the world. For example:
- According to Mckinsey in his June 2022 report titled Value creation in the metaverse, notes that. “A decade from now, the metaverse has all the potential to power a very different world. By 2030, more than 80% of commerce could be affected by something consumers do there, from discovering brands to visiting an online store. With the potential to generate up to $5 trillion in value by 2030, the metaverse is simply too big to ignore.”
- The Economic Times in an April 2022 publication titled How the metaverse future may look like in 2030, indicates that. “With major players like Meta entering this space, it’s only a matter of time before we see other entities following suit. It could lead to an exponential expansion of the boundaries of the metaverse and unlock hitherto unknown vast volumes of value for consumers and investors alike.”
- Gartner in its September 2022 report titled Outlines Six Trends Driving Near-Term Adoption of Metaverse technologies, predicts that. “By 2027, most CMOs at B2C companies will have a budget dedicated to digital humans in metaverse experiences.”
- Pew Research Center in their June 2022 research titled The Metaverse in 2040 which surveyed 624 technology innovators, developers, business and political leaders, researchers and activists. He claims that. “54% of respondents expect that by 2040 the metaverse itself will be a much more refined and truly immersive aspect of daily life and that it will work well for half a billion or more people around the world.” In this same investigation, 46% said no.
- According to Technology Vision 2022 from Accenture. “86% of technology executives say the metaverse will have a positive impact on their organizations. The metaverse is about to become the next great wave of technological innovation. And, like previous waves, high-tech companies are uniquely positioned to both drive it and benefit from it.”
During 2022, many were the technological giants that invested in the metaverse. This is the case of Meta, Google, Microsoft, Epic Games, Nvidia, and Animoca Brands. And to these were added other large companies, such as: Adidas, PepsiCo, Walmart, Nike, etc.
The truth is that no one has a crystal ball to say exactly what will happen to the metaverse, however, the most serious forecasts indicate that we are on our way to the transformation point, and it is very likely that we will reach it. Therefore, it is our responsibility to start preparing.
