In the fashion industry, one of the most important events, internationally speaking, is the Met Gala, which year after year has sought to dazzle us and raise funds since 1948. Now, the theme of the event has been revealed. Met Gala 2024: “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion” (sleeping beauties: the awakening of fashion).
This has been announced by the Costume Institute of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New Yorkwhose spring exhibition is inaugurated with a big party full of glamor and celebrities.
Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion
The ‘sleeping beauties’, will span 400 years of fashion history with 250 pieces from the permanent collection of the Costume Institute. However, what is shocking is that the name refers to the fragility of the garments, which must be kept in special glass “coffins” to be preserved.
“Using the natural world as a unifying visual metaphor for the transience of fashion, the show will explore cyclical themes of rebirth and renewal, breathing new life into these historic objects through creative and immersive activations designed to convey the scents, sounds, textures and movements of garments that can no longer interact directly with the body,” the museum explained in a statement.
In other words, the historically significant garments, known as ‘sleeping beauties’, cannot be worn again. While nature will serve as a metaphor for the fragility and ephemerality of fashion.
Furthermore, among them are works of Christian Dior, Yves Saint Laurent, Hubert Givenchy, Alexander McQueen, Phillip Lim, Stella McCartney and Elsa Schiaparelliamong others.
On the other hand, the exhibition will incorporate new technologies such as augmented reality, artificial intelligence and images generated by AI. So that? According to the MET, for “reactivate the sensory capacities of the masterpieces in the Museum’s collection.”
