Mercedes has stepped on the accelerator and faces the final stretch of the development process of a very important update. The time has come for the exclusive Mercedes G-Class undergoes a new set-up. A review that will put the finishing touch to the commercial journey of this generation. And it is that, hand in hand with this generation, the German off-roader will say goodbye to the thermal engine to welcome the 100% electric era.
In recent months, thanks to our spy photographers, we have had the opportunity to get closer to the development of the new Mercedes G-Class 2023. Once again, a prototype has been hunted in broad daylight. However, on this occasion, the sighting has occurred in southern Europe. Place to which Mercedes has moved its particular «headquarters».

The camouflage, as in previous sightings, continues to make an appearance on the front and rear. It is logical that only these two areas are covered since it will be in them where the design changes. Both bumpers will be modified and, what is equally relevant, we must not ignore adjustments to the headlights. Beyond modifications in the exterior design, the set-up will also be improved. Specifically, it’s about damping.
If we had the opportunity to go into the interior of the new G-Class, we will be enveloped by a more digital and connected environment. It will debut the latest generation of the MBUX infotainment system. The instrumentation will be updated and it will also sport a new multifunction steering wheel with a sporty design. It is also foreseeable that new customization options will be introduced in the range, both exterior and interior.
Regarding the mechanical section we should not expect surprises. The range of engines will continue to be made up of a selection of petrol and diesel blocks. The minimal changes that will be made will aim to reduce fuel consumption and emissions. That is why the 48-volt mild hybrid (MHEV) technology will make an appearance. In this way, we will find versions that will wear the ECO environmental label of the DGT (General Directorate of Traffic).
Mercedes G-Class 2023, a special farewell edition?
At this point it is worth pointing out another possibility that is on the table. It is not ruled out that Mercedes markets this facelift as a special and/or limited edition with which to say goodbye to this generation and, therefore, the internal combustion G-Class. Let us remember that, once the production is finished, will give way to the new 100% electric Mercedes EQG. Mercedes does not plan to develop a new gasoline or diesel G-Class. Unfortunately these are the times.
When will it be revealed? Mercedes, as we have pointed out at the beginning of this article, is already facing the final stretch of this development. The coming-out of the new G-Class is scheduled for this year. After the summer. Now, it will land in dealerships as a 2023 model.
